Prof. Andrew R Davies BSc (Hons), MBChB, MSc, MD, FRCS
Andrew Davies is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. He is also Professor of Surgery at King’s College London with a track record of practice-changing research.
His private practice is based at the London Bridge hospital in London., Spire Clare Park in Farnham and the Nuffield hospital in Guildford, Surrey. Patients are sometimes treated privately at St Thomas’ Hospital.
Specialist training
Andrew graduated from Edinburgh University and subsequently undertook his higher surgical training in a number of leading London teaching hospitals including King’s College liver unit, the Royal Marsden and St Thomas’ hospitals. During his training he was awarded two prestigious laparoscopic surgery fellowships to UPMC, Pittsburgh, USA and Unitas Medical Centre, Pretoria, SA.
Current Practice
At St Thomas’ Hospital, Prof. Davies performs a high volume of complex procedures for cancer of the oesophagus and stomach and benign conditions such as hiatus hernia repair (anti-reflux surgery including fundoplication and Linx procedures). He also carries out operations for more common conditions including gallstones (cholecystectomy) and abdominal hernias. He has a particular interest in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.
Private general surgery in Surrey & Hampshire
As a private general surgeon, Andrew sees patients at London Bridge, Spire Clare Park (Farnham) and Nuffield (Guildford). He performs endoscopy, anti-reflux surgery (hiatus hernia repair, fundoplication and Linx surgery), gallstone surgery (cholecystectomy) and a high volume of hernia repairs (inguinal, umbilical, epigastric and spigelian hernias). Major cancer resections are not performed on these sites but patients can still be assessed if there are concerns about oesophageal (gullet) or gastric (stomach) cancer.
Academic Profile
Andrew has a strong academic background with a first-class honours BSc, a Masters degree with distinction and an MD in the staging and management of oesophageal cancer. He is Professor of Upper GI Surgery at King’s College, London and an affiliated researcher at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Andrew has published widely in the field of upper GI surgery, led a number of large international research studies and clinical trials. He has been an invited speaker at numerous international conferences, regularly reviews articles for leading scientific journals and is a member of the editorial board for the British Journal of Surgery. He sits on committees for both the International and European Societies for diseases of the oesophagus.
