Establishing consensus on exercise (prehabilitation) before major cancer surgery

Prof. Davies has recently led a national initiative (with society support from AUGIS) to gain consensus and standardise prehabilitation in upper GI cancer surgery. The key recommendations are :-

  1. All patients should be considered for prehabilitation
  2. Programmes should incorporate exercise, nutrition and (where required) psychological support
  3. The intervention should be tailored to the individual needs of patients
  4. Professionals should be specifically qualified and trained in the delivery of prehabilitation programmes
  5. Prehabilitation may improve a wide range of outcomes in patients having major cancer surgery
