Mr James A. Gossage BSc (Hons) MBBS MS FRCS

James Gossage is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

His private practice is based at the London Bridge Hospital in London. Patients are also seen and treated privately at St Thomas’ Hospital and Consultations Sessions are held in central London and at the Sevenoaks Medical Centre in Kent.

Specialist Training

His specialist surgical training was based in leading London teaching hospitals and the South-East of England. He was awarded a laparoscopic surgical fellowship and a HCA Foundation grant to study surgical techniques in the Professorial Unit in Adelaide, Australia. He also received a Royal College of Surgeons grant to study trauma surgery in South Africa.

Current Practice

​At St Thomas’ Hospital he performs a high volume of complex procedures for cancer of the oesophagus and stomach. He also treats benign conditions of the oesophagus and carries out surgery for more common conditions including keyhole surgery for gallstones and hernias. He is part of national and international specialist groups to improve the quality and outcomes from surgery.

Academic Profile

He has a strong academic background and was awarded a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons for his research towards his higher degree. He is currently a Senior Lecturer at Kings College, London and an affiliated researcher with the Upper Gastrointestinal Research Unit at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles on his specialist area, two book chapters and a textbook on surgery.
